This school year I took a job teaching a one-room homeschool. I went to work on it as soon as I heard the job was going to be available which was in around March or April of last year. They hired me in July and school started on August 15. School ended on August 18.
Initially I had 5 students enroll. It was a promising year. On the first day of school my little kindergarten boy didn't show up. But, I had the other four. I also had a grandma who was planning to spend the day at school every day rather than spend the gas to go back home. I had nothing for her to do. She just sat there at my teaching table doing nothing. One of my sixth grade girls wanted to play tackle football. I said no. My fourth grade boy couldn't read. I told Grandma I was going to give him a placement test in reading and place him in a level he could handle. I thought that the kid needed to experience success in reading and he might develop an interest in it. He wanted to read. Apparently Grandma didn't like this cause the next day she didn't show up and didn't bother to call me. I heard through another source that they wouldn't be back. The girl was mad about the football and told my other sixth grader she wasn't coming back.
This left me three students. My kindergarten boy didn't show up on Tuesday either. Wednesday afternoon his mother called and said she wouldn't be bringing him. Now I was down to two students. Thursday afternoon their grandfather came in and said they wanted the girls in a school where they could have friends. He withdrew them.
I don't know what I did wrong. I firmly believe that child needed help with his reading and placing him in an appropriate level was the right thing to do. He could have caught up. Insurance wouldn't cover the students playing tackle football. I couldn't allow it.
So, now I'm unemployed again. I've been spending my time creating learning activities for other teachers and plan to start spending more time on my website. The lady at Font Nook contacted me offering me the use of her fonts on my website and I'll be adding some of them. I've created a new link to Theresa's page and added a link to my husband's page. I have several ideas I hope to implement. Just gots to figure out the html.
