Hi everyone:

This contraption we call a computer continues to amaze me. Let me tell you a short story. I belong to a font club. Every day in the mail I receive a handfull of new fonts which I file away either for later use or simply file away.

My brother is a rock hound. We live in an area in Arkansas that is rich in minerals and he conducts tours on weekends, taking people out where they can actually dig up some of these rocks and take home with them. He also is president of the local rock hunting club and runs their newsletter.

When he first took the job as editor he came to me for help. He had articles but didn't know what to do with them. I showed him how to set it up and also showed him what a difference the different fonts and dings would make to his publication. He is now producing an excellent newsletter and has received quite a few compliments.

In order to help him a bit more, I requested from my font club that they send me some rock fonts. A few days later someone sent me an email with rock fonts in it. It appeared she had sent two duplicates of her letter. They were sitting in my inbox one on top of the other, they had the same subject line, the same sender and were the same size. They were identical. When I tried to open either of them the message "Whoops! Our system is busy right now please try again later," always appeared on the screen. I was able to open any other file but not these. Every time I tried I got that message.

I waited a few days to see if my email provider was experiencing problems and give them time to correct it. Nothing happened. So, I wrote them a letter explaining the problem and asking them to make the repair so I could open my mail. You know what happens when you report a glitch. All I got was an automated response telling me everything that I already knew and not in any way addressing the problem at hand.

A week later I still hadn't heard from them and still was unable to open the email. I wrote them again and referenced the earlier request. Again I merely received an automated response with all the answers to everything I already knew but not addressing my particular problem.

I was frustrated. I gave up and wrote to the person who had sent it to me. She was very kind and resent the fonts. She also said that she had only sent them once and didn't know why I had received them twice.

Here's a clue! She sent them once, I received them twice? No wonder they were hung. Now why couldn't Mail.com fix that problem? I downloaded the fonts she resent without any problem. Now I could clean out my mailbox. I had twelve messages and quickly scanned to see if there were any more I could comfortably toss. Those two identical rock submissions were there so I clicked on them both and tossed them in the trash. When the screen came back they were both gone and I still had eleven messages. Huh? What's happened to math? When I grew up twelve minus two was ten - always. I clicked on the button to take me to my private email account. The screen flashed and reloaded but was still at the catlover account. Yahoo wouldn't load. While waiting on Yahoo I noticed at the very bottom of the screen was that file I had just trashed. Somehow it had returned to the inbox. I cancelled my trip to Yahoo (which wasn't going through anyway) and tried opening that email. It opened without a problem and I was able to download those fonts. I had to rename them because Pam had kindly resent them so I now have two of them.

What'll I do with two? Throw one away.

There are a few things to report going on at Renae's Room. For one, I've got to find a new mail provider. ListBot is shutting down their free service and only providing their email for a hefty fee now. I reiterate that this is my hobby and I make no money at it. I'm already paying for my server and a few other items and cannot afford to pay hefty fees for something I don't get much use of. So, there may or may not be a space before the next time I write.

Also, did I mention last month that we have two new font designers who have said I could post their work? If not I tell you now. If so I've gone plumb mad and repeating myself. But thanks to House of Lime and Kat of Kat's Fun Fonts. Thanks to both of you.
