The professor, admonishing his class for generally low test results, said, "A fool can ask more questions than a wise man can answer." A student countered, "No wonder so many of us flunked!"/Submitted by: Jim

Hi Everyone:

First, let me apologize for sending you so many notes when I was switching to Yahoo! Groups. Their instructions are not very clear and I couldn't tell I had sent the newsletter last time. When four copies of it finally ended up hitting my own emailbox I knew I had goofed. I apologize. Hopefully I can remember how to work the thing and this time it won't be such a problem.

We've recently experienced a nightmare. Last week I downloaded a game from a reputable source. I installed it to my computer then clicked on the shortcut key it gave me in order to play it. This was actually a shortcut to the uninstall file so I went into my computer and found the folder containing the game and all its components. What I discovered was that they had omitted an .exe to allow game play. This wasn't fun. All I could do was install and uninstall. During the installation process a screen came on stating that I needed to update my DirectX to 7.0 or 7.1 or 7.something and gave me Microsoft's address where I could download it. I did download but waited for Abe to come home and make the installation for me. He did.

Now you gotta understand how Abe handles a computer. He yells, screams, turns red in the face, creates a whole new language and eventually he'll have the computer so intimidated that it will give in and do what it's been balking about. I was so glad I wasn't the one who had installed that DirectX because it ate my Windows. Total destruction to the registry. Abe was in full form, pounding furiously on the keyboard and I learned a lot about Bill Gates that evening. I had created new emergency boot disks as recently as July 31 but the computer was so crashed they wouldn't work.

The next day while at work Abe answered the phone (not normally his job) and the computer wiz at corporate headquarters just happened to be the one calling. He got an earfull when Abe told him about my mangled computer. His help was simply to laugh and say that DirectX was notorious for doing that. But he gave no suggestions to salvage my new (used) computer. I was having to run across the street to the neighbors to keep my email under control and any work on Renae's Room was suspended indefinately.

The problem occurred on Monday. He slept on it and by Tuesday evening Abe knew what he was going to do. When he got home Thursday at 6 o'clock, he sat down at my computer and got started. If I understand correctly, what he did was to go into DOS and manually delete all the Windows directory files. He was able to write little programs to do most of the work for him and by 11 o'clock that same night my computer was back on and working. I lost some of my files but nothing that can't be replaced.

My brother had brought me a game that wouldn't work on his computer. Yesterday I tried installing it and it told me I needed to update my DirectX in order for it to work. It even offered to do it for me. I hit cancel and returned the game to my brother. I may be insane but I'm not nuts!

A little boy got lost at the YWCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover.

The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, "What's the matter -- haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"/Submitted by: Sally

We had some exciting news on Friday. I opened my email and found that Renae's Room had been given an award. It was graded on being a primarily non-commercial site, content rich (not simply links to other sites), and is kid safe. I was thrilled! I had no idea my site was even being considered. The award was immediately placed up front and is very visual to anyone coming to the site. Here's a big thanks to Teacher's Song.

I've been working on updating the jokes. Several of you have sent them in and no, I'm not trying to ignore you. I'll try getting the rest up soon. But for now you'll find that I've shortened the length of the page and have divided it up. There are now four jokes pages with the most recent ones starting on page one and working back.

That'll about do it for now. By now some of you are already in school others are starting right away. I wish you the best for the new year.
