Hi Renae,
I am a first grade teacher in Santa Ana but this idea is one I used in third grade to help children with the concept of multiplication. I took small bowls and put the same number of items in each bowl. (ex. 3 bowls with 5 cubes in each) I explained that 3x5 =the items in all 3 bowls or 15. It also works with division. 1/3 of 15 = 5. I hope you can use this.
